Chapter Seventy Two
Volunteering at the shelter had a way of putting everything in perspective. A bad day at work was nothing compared to seeing little dogs and cats spending their days in a cage hoping to be adopted. They were the outsiders in a madcap world. That was a feeling Eva was all too familiar with. So it was nice for Eva to be able to spend a couple hours becoming reacquainted with what really mattered in life--the spreading of love and kindness.
It felt good to be of service. Like she had found a way to honor the Lord and have fun in the process. Eva couldn't wait to tell Jaylen. But he had news of his own.
"I got accepted," Jaylen exclaimed.
Eva was barely inside the door when Jaylen gave her the news. What the news was though remained unclear.
"What?" Eva asked.
"Remember how I submitted my short film to that festival on a lark? Well, it got in," Jaylen said.
Eva had not been so delightfully surprised in a long time. It was hard to contain her excitement. It was so incredible that she wanted to make sure she had heard Jaylen right.
"Do you mean to tell me that your film is going to be showing at the theater down the street?" Eva asked.
Jaylen nodded. "Not just that. But there's going to be over ten thousand people at that film festival."
"That's amazing," Eva said.
"I know. I can barely believe it myself."
"Well you earned it," Eva replied. "It's a great movie. You're going to do great things. I just know it."
"I believe that distinction belongs to you."
"Why can't it belong to both of us? God blesses all that honor him."
"Speaking of, how is my little blessing doing today?" Jaylen asked.
"Well, I don't have a movie playing at a film festival like some people I know," Eva joked.
"Are you enjoying your time at the shelter though?"
"I think I might have finally found my reason for coming to DC," Eva admitted.
"And here I thought the reason was so you could meet me," Jaylen joked.
"In all seriousness, I finally feel like I found my purpose. To help out those less fortunate. I just thought the less fortunate would be human instead of animal," Eva explained.
"It's not just humans that need help. And you will be of great service at the shelter. I just know it," Jaylen said.
"You really are a sweet guy. You've just received some of the best news a man can get, yet here we are talking about my day of volunteering," Eva said.
"There are no small tasks when serving the Lord. So today we both have cause for cheer."
Eva got a glimmer in her eyes. "Let's get the celebration started then."
